The Greek Democritus proposed that matter had a limit to how finely it could be "cut" by a sharp knife. He named these "a-tomos" which literally means "un-cuttable" and is the root source of the modern word "atom". The Hindus also offered an atomic theory. Aristotle rejected "a-tomos" and held that any "minima" portion of substance could always be reduced. Classical Atomists could never develop a reasonable theory of how atoms joined together to form the objects we observe in the Universe. But in chemistry, the "atomic" nature of matter was being firmly established by experimentation. When it became obvious that electrons and alpha particles were related to atoms, various new electrical models were put forth -- including a positive pudding with negative raisin "electrons" theory, and a solar system theory where electrons orbited a positive nucleus like planets in the solar system. Quantum "wave" theory has developed the best atomic model so far and has supplanted all older classical models. Atoms en masse were first observed using electron microscopes; and the first actual capture and observation (using lasers) of single atom (of Boron) occurred in 1996.

Why did the atomic theory change over time?

The atomic theory changed over time as new scientific discoveries and evidence emerged through experimentation. Early atomic theories were revised and refined to better explain the behavior of atoms and their interactions with each other. The development of more advanced experimental techniques also contributed to a better understanding of atomic structure and properties.

Why did it take 2000 years for scientists to confirm some of Democritus ideas about atoms?

Democritus gave a theory, but Aristotle shut him out. Everybody forgot about this, and there was no one looking into this, no progress was being made.

Why has the model of the atom changed over time?

The model of the atom has changed over time as new experimental evidence and advancements in scientific theories have provided a better understanding of the structure and behavior of atoms. Early models were simple and did not explain many observed phenomena, leading to revisions and the development of more sophisticated models such as the Bohr model and the quantum mechanical model._ADV

Has Uranium changed over time?

The chemical and physical properties of uranium remain unchanged. But because uranium is a radioactive element the quantity of uranium on the earth is permanently changed due to radioactive decay.

Did the glue stick change shape over time?

No, a glue stick does not change shape over time. It maintains its solid cylindrical form and remains useful as long as it is stored properly and not exposed to extreme temperatures.
