Ionic VS CovalentIn an ionic bond there is complete transference of electrons while in covalent there is sharing of electrons.In an ionic bond, the atoms are bound by attraction of opposite ions, whereas, in a covalent bond, atoms are bound by sharing electrons. In covalent bonding, the molecular geometry around each atom is determined by VSEPR rules, whereas, in ionic materials, the geometry follows maximum packing rules.

Covalent bonds are usually associated with organic(carbon-based) compounds-of which you and I are are made( and all other humans). In a covalent bond, electrons are "shared" between two or more atoms. Take the organic compound methane(CH4) for instance. Here, each electron from hydrogen(H) is shared the the single carbon(C) atom; and the carbon atom shares one of its four electrons in its outer shell with each of four hydrogen atoms.

The attraction between carbon(C) and hydrogen(H) in the case of methane is a weak one-hence the properties associated with methane( a gas with a low boiling point).
