well, i don't know about CSI but Chormatography is used to define which pen is used for a balckmail note-for example. a dot of ink is placed on filter paper and then in water. the water then carries the ink across the paper to form a colourful stripe. a sample is then taken from the blackmail note and the same thing is done. if the colours match, then the sample pen is the one that is used on the blackmail note.

What is used as the stationary phase in paper chromatography?

The stationary phase in paper chromatography is the paper itself.

What are the two types of paper chromatogaphy?

The two types of paper chromatography are ascending chromatography, where the solvent moves up the paper, and descending chromatography, where the solvent moves down the paper.

What are the key differences between paper chromatography and thin layer chromatography?

Paper chromatography and thin layer chromatography are both techniques used to separate and analyze mixtures of substances. The key differences between them lie in the materials used and the method of separation. In paper chromatography, a strip of paper is used as the stationary phase, while in thin layer chromatography, a thin layer of silica gel or other material is used. Additionally, in paper chromatography, the solvent moves up the paper through capillary action, while in thin layer chromatography, the solvent is applied directly to the stationary phase. Overall, thin layer chromatography is faster and more efficient than paper chromatography, but both techniques have their own advantages and applications in analytical chemistry.

What is the stationary phase for paper chromatography Material?

The stationary phase for paper chromatography is the material that stays fixed in place on the paper, allowing the mobile phase (solvent) to move through it and separate the components of a mixture.

Why solvent is used in Paper chromatography?

Solvent is used in paper chromatography to carry the sample mixture along the paper and separate its components based on their affinity for the solvent and the paper. As the solvent moves through the paper, it dissolves the components of the sample and allows them to separate based on their solubility and interactions with the paper.

Uses for paper chromatography?

They are used in many scientific studies to identify unknown organic and inorganic compounds. They are also used in crime scene investigation, DNA and RNA sequencing, among others. Essentially, any solution can be separated through some form of chromatography.

Which chromatographic process would be least likely to be utilized in the crime lab?

Size-exclusion chromatography would be least likely to be utilized in the crime lab compared to other types such as gas chromatography or liquid chromatography. Size-exclusion chromatography separates molecules based on their size, making it less commonly used for the complex mixture analysis typically required in forensic investigations.

What can you use instead of chromatography paper in a paper chromatography test?

Instead of chromatography paper, you can use materials like coffee filters, filter paper, or even paper towels for paper chromatography tests. These alternative materials can absorb the solvent and help separate the components of a mixture based on their solubility and molecular properties, similar to chromatography paper.

What is Ethiopia's writing system?

The Different Types of Chromatography There are four main types of chromatography. These are Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Thin-Layer Chromatography and Paper Chromatography. Liquid Chromatography is used in the world to test water samples to look for pollution in lakes and rivers. It is used to analyze metal ions and organic compounds in solutions. Liquid chromatography uses liquids which may incorporate hydrophilic, insoluble molecules. Gas Chromatography is used in airports to detect bombs and is used is forensics in many different ways. It is used to analyze fibers on a persons body and also analyze blood found at a crime scene. In gas chromatography helium is used to move a gaseous mixture through a column of absorbent material. Thin-layer Chromatography uses an absorbent material on flat glass or plastic plates. This is a simple and rapid method to check the purity of an organic compound. It is used to detect pesticide or insecticide residues in food. Thin-layer chromatography is also used in forensics to analyze the dye composition of fibers. Paper Chromatography is one of the most common types of chromatography. It uses a strip of paper as the stationary phase. Capillary action is used to pull the solvents up through the paper and separate the solutes.

Are paper and thin layer chromatography types of planer chromatography?
