A neutral atom of oxygen has 6 electrons in it's most outer orbit. Generally, if you count horizontally from left-to-right on the Periodic Table, you get the number of electrons in its' most outer orbit. You start every row with 1, of course. :)

Hope that helps!

Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. These are in the outer orbit.

How many electrons are usually in the outer orbit of a neutral atom of magnesium?

2 electrons orbit in the outer shell. If its a neutral atom, then it will have the same number of electrons as protons. Magnesium has 12 protons and 12 electrons.

Oxygen has 6 valence electrons (Electrons in the outer most orbit). However, on the whole, Oxygen has 8 electrons as its atomic number is 8.

The orbit of oxygen has two electrons?

Most oxygen molecules contain two atoms, which we breath O2. If we breath pure oxygen (one atom) our lungs would burn. Three molecules of oxygen is the ozone which is unstable and converts back to O2.

Can oxygen accept and donate electrons?

Under normal conditions of temperature and pressure, oxygen gains electrons. The outermost orbital in an oxygen atom has four electrons., i.e., the outermost orbit has six electrons. Hence, to reach the octet configuration, oxygen can take two more electrons. Thus, oxygen is electronegative.

What is the formula for the ionic compound containing iron three ions and oxide ions?

Fe2O3. Iron three contains three electrons in the outer orbit and Oxygen has two slots empty in the outer orbit, so in order for the compound to combine, three oxygen atoms are needed for two Fe atoms, and then the compound is neutral.

Cations are formed by?

cations are positively charged ions formed by loss of electrons from the neutral atoms having 1,2,3 electrons in the outermost orbit
