Electricity is sent from where it is generated (hydroelectric dam, Nuclear power plant) on high voltage lines on tall towers to local transformer substations. These substations change or 'transform' the voltage to a lower voltage which can be carried more safely over the power lines which run down your street. After that the electricity is transformed again usually by a pole mounted transformer or pad mount transformer near your home (usually one transformer for every few homes) to a voltage you can safely use with appliances. In a home this is usually 120/240V at 60hz. In a factory it could be 120/208V, 277/480V, 347/600V, etc...
