As both atoms/ elements compromise and donate/accept electrons, the atoms have a charge associated with them based on whether they donate or accept electrons. In NaCl, since Na (Sodium) loses an electron, it has a positive charge(+1) whereas Chlorine has a negative charge (-1) as it gains one electron. Thus ionic compounds have two oppositely charge ions.
