"Is diamond an element or compound"

Actually diamond is an element.

Diamond is made up largely of pure crystallized carbon. Diamond is one of the Earths rarest and most beautiful gemstones and is an inorganic substance that has its own chemical composition. Diamond is the only gemstone that is made of only one element, Carbon.

The Correct View

Actually a diamond is an object not an element. The element is carbon and the carbon molecules combine under extreme conditions to form a diamond. This example is no different than an iceberg. An iceberg is comprised of water molecules that combine under extreme conditions to form an ice pack which can then break into icebergs. But an iceberg is not water, an iceberg is comprised of water molecules. In this way a diamond is comprised of carbon. The element is carbon and the diamond is an object formed of that element.

Diamond is an element. Although it is not listed in the Periodic Table, diamond is mainly composed of Carbon atoms. Carbon is indeed an element listed on the Periodic Table. Diamond is one of the many forms of Carbon, take Graphite and Buckminsterfullerene for example.

Diamond is not a compound because a compound always contains two or more elements.
