"Is diamond an element or compound"

Actually diamond is an element.

Diamond is made up largely of pure crystallized carbon. Diamond is one of the Earths rarest and most beautiful gemstones and is an inorganic substance that has its own chemical composition. Diamond is the only gemstone that is made of only one element, Carbon.

The Correct View

Actually a diamond is an object not an element. The element is carbon and the carbon molecules combine under extreme conditions to form a diamond. This example is no different than an iceberg. An iceberg is comprised of water molecules that combine under extreme conditions to form an ice pack which can then break into icebergs. But an iceberg is not water, an iceberg is comprised of water molecules. In this way a diamond is comprised of carbon. The element is carbon and the diamond is an object formed of that element.

Is diamond an element or a compound?

Diamond is a pure element made up of carbon atoms arranged in a crystal structure.

Is a diamond a element compound or a mixture?

Technically, diamond is neither an element, a compound, or a mixture. Diamond is made up of pure carbon atoms, so it is not a mixture, and a compound by definition requires two or more different elements. The best definition using the above terms is that diamond is a mineral made up of the same element.

Is diamond or graphite an element or compound?

They are both the same element , viz. Carbon. Diamond and Graphite are different allotropes of carbon, together with Buckminster Fullerene (Footballene). An ALLOTROPE of an element is where the element exhibits different physical characteristics, such as appearance.

Is diamond a compond or a element?

Diamond is a MOLECULE of the element Carbon only. It is NOT a compound. Compounds are molecules of the atoms of different elements e.g. water (H2O) is a compound. Two different elements 'H' & 'O' , but oxygen (O2) is a molecule. Only one element 'O' present. The distinction between molecules and compounds is very subtle. Molecules ; A combination of the SAME or DIFFERENT elemental atoms' Compound ; A combination of DIFFERENT elemental atoms' Diamond is composed of the element Carbon only. The carbon atoms are held in a tetrahedral arrangement, known as an 'Adamantine Structure'.

Is diamond an element?

No, diamond is not an element. It is a form of carbon, which is an element on the periodic table.

Is a diamond a compound or an element?

Diamond is not an element but it is a compound of carbon. It is fully made of carbon atoms

Is diamond an element compound or mixture?

Diamond is an ELEMENT. It is NEITHER a compound NOR a mixture. Diamond is a molecule composed of only the atoms of carbon , in a very specific arrangement. In diamond, any one carbon atom is combined to four adjacent carbon atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement (like methane). This tetrahedral arrangement tesselates to become a diamond ( that you can hold). This arramngement of carbon atoms is known as the 'Adamantine' structure. It is also one of the three ALLOTROPES of Carbon. The others being graphite and Buckminster Fullerene(Footballene). NB Do NOT confuse the words 'Allotrope' with 'Isotope'. They have totally different meanings.

Why is silicon dioxide a compound where as diamond is an element Explain?

Diamond consists of only one element (carbon). Whereas Silicon dioxide consists of two different elements (silicon and oxygen) that are chemically bonded in a fixed ratio. Hence Diamond is an element and Silicon dioxide is an compound.

Is the crystal element or compound?

Crystals can be elements (as diamond) or compounds (as sapphire).
