As an additional advantage the meniscus of the mercury is upwards at the center, unlike water, making accurate reading simpler. However mercury's toxic attributes make it hazardous if spilled, so mechanical diaphragm barometers are often used.

∙ 14y agoThe most known liquid for thermometers is the mercury; also are frequently used thermometers filled with ethanol (possible other organic liquids as toluene, kerosene, etc.). These organic reagents are colored for visibility. Rarely used are thermometers with gallium or gallium alloys.
