That's ridiculous. But you are right. It is a chemical change. In particular it is called combustion whereby the item being burned is turned into different compounds (CO2 and H2O). The light emitted from burning is also a chemical reaction resulting from the excited states of electrons emitting a photon as they lower to a more stable energy level.

Yes. When you burn a fuel you convert the fuel (usually a hydrocarbon) and oxygen into water and carbon dioxide. So the materials you start with are converted into completely different substances.

For example, the wood and oxygen are converted to carbon dioxide and water, which are different chemicals.
