When methane is in the gaseous state, you're physically able to breathe it, but

it would be very dangerous for you to do so. Methane can't sustain your life as

oxygen does, and in fact is poisonous.

yes because Methane gas, abundantly trapped as a half frozen slush in the northern hemisphere's tundra permafrost regions and at the bottom of the sea may well be a ticking time bomb, says geologist John Atcheson in an article published by the Baltimore Sun in December last year. Methane is about twenty times stronger as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Since arctic warming seems to procede faster than expected, there is a real danger that deposits of methane and similar gases trapped in normally frozen ground, may thaw out and "belch" into the atmosphere, wreaking havoc with our computer simulations of global warming.

How many times worse is methane compared to carbon dioxide?

Methane is twenty-one times more powerful a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide.

What does methane do to the environment?

methane is a greenhouse gas .. it locks the sun's energy in the atmosphere

What is worse for the environment smoking or flying?

Flying is much worse for the environment than smoking. Planes burn fossil fuel which releases carbon dioxide that has been hidden away for millions of years. This is what is causing global warming.Smoking releases carbon dioxide too, but it is carbon dioxide that was taken out of the atmosphere a few months ago when the tobacco was growing, so it is part of the earth's carbon cycle, and is not contributing to global warming.

What does environment impact mean?

It means the effect of something on the environment eg the farming of cattle causes methane to be released into the atmosphere (from both ends of the cow) which is very bad for the atmosphere. Methane is 60 times worse than carbon dioxide as an agent of global warming. So damage to the atmosphere is the impact on the environment of cattle farming.

How do you decrease your carbon footprint?

Don't use candles; the energy-generation process used to power light bulbs is more efficient, especially if you use the newer type.Turn your compost regularly; this prevents the buildup of methane as opposed to carbon dioxide. Methane is a worse "greenhouse gas".

Why nitrogen preferred over carbon dioxide as propellant in DCP fire fighting system?

Carbon dioxide is a pollutant. Nitrogen is used by the plants. When you use carbon dioxide as a propellant,it adds more pollution or makes greenhouse effect worse....

What is the purpose for energy from garbage?

Rather than let the methane released by decomposition go into the atmosphere where it is a worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, we burn it and get energy from waste materials. Since we keep making waste, it is almost renewable energy.

Does the ozone layer protect earth from carbon dioxide?

NO! if anything its makes global warming worse.

Why is meat production bad for the environment?

The production of most meat requires great amounts of resources that could be better used in making food directly for humans. The environmental impact from growing the feed for cattle is up to 20 times that of growing food for human consumption. Cattle release large amounts of methane from their digestive system and from their poop which is bad as methane is many times worse than most other gases for the greenhouse effect (although carbon dioxide is - in total - a greater problem)

How does plankon function?

Plankton takes in carbon dioxide from the sea and stores it in its body. When plankton dies, it still has the carbon dioxide inside it, so has removed some of the problem from the ocean (problem for us). Without plankton, there'd be a lot more carbon dioxide and global warming would be worse.

Are cow farts worse than humans for the environment?

Cattle and other ruminants produce much more methane in their intestinal gases than humans as the intestinal bacteria digest cellulose. (Most of the gas comes out of the cow's mouth!) Methane is a greenhouse gas and bad for the environment.

What happens when there is great amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas which is causing Global Warming. When there is a great amount of it in the atmosphere, then it absorbs a great amount of heat. This makes Global Warming worse.
