Oil and water would be a mechanical mixture. An element is one of the pure atoms on the Periodic Table, for example, Oxygen, Gold, Rubidium, or Chromium. Compounds, like water and carbon dioxide, are made up of two or more elements combined together. Oil and water, seperately, are both compounds. However, they do not interact when mixed, and therefore make a mixture.
