The plot is what is going on. The Theme is the big over arcing topic. A theme is usually expresses as only one word, and there can be more than one, but there is only ever one plot. For example, in the very humgry caterpillar the plot would be the caterpillar ate through lots of stuff and then became a butterfly, where as the theme could be said to be maturation.
