Pyrolusite is a manganese oxide mineral, that has yet to cause any fatalities. It could kill you if you grind it very fine and inhale it, or eat enough of it, or drop a block of it on your head, but other than that it's not much of a hazard to anybody.

How does magnetite differ from pyrolusite?

Magnetite is a naturally occurring magnetic mineral composed of iron oxide (Fe3O4), whereas pyrolusite is a mineral composed of manganese dioxide (MnO2). Magnetite is black or gray in color, has a metallic luster, and is magnetic, while pyrolusite is typically black or dark gray and has a dull to submetallic luster. Magnetite is commonly used in industries like mining and construction, while pyrolusite is used in the production of dry cell batteries and as a pigment in ceramics and glass.

When and where did the chlorine discover?

Chlorine compounds have been important to humans for thousands of years. Ordinary table salt, for example, is sodium chloride (NaCl). Still, chlorine was not recognized as an element until 1774, when Scheele was studying the mineral pyrolusite. Pyrolusite consists primarily of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). Scheele mixed pyrolusite with hydrochloric acid (HCl), then called spiritus salis. He found that a greenish-yellow gas with a suffocating odor "most oppressive to the lungs" was released. The gas was chlorine.
