Stainless steel is an alloy. It typically contains iron, carbon, nickel and chromium. Alloys are usually defined as mixtures. It's a very interesting example though. In some ways alloys are like compounds in that they exhibit properties which are unlike those of their constituents. A good steel alloy will be homogeneous.
