Tar is a hydrocarbon. All hydrocarbons (even coal which is essentially pure carbon) are flammable. Industrial burners use hot tar (usually referred to as Bunker C) as a fuel. It is cheap. The flash point for tars (temperature at which they may be ignited ) ranges from 100oC to 300oC
