Safety is a good reason for knowing the chemical and physical properties of substances. For example, diluting acid by adding water can possibly cause acid burns to a person's skin or eyes because a large amount of heat is released when water is added to a strong acid, so much heat that the solution may boil very violently and splash acid out of the container, but slowly adding acid to water is a relatively safe procedure.
