Water freezes and become ice when it is kept in the freezer for some time. Water expands during freezing and a water bottle will crack when it is kept in the freezer. Why?

Water expands when it freezes due to molecular geometry and the fact that it is a very polar molecule. The water molecule is shaped like an upside-down "v". Due to this shape, when water freezes it make a hexagonal shape such that the slightly negatively charge oxygen atoms are aligned with the slightly positively charge hydrogen atoms -- this is the most stable configuration. (Molecules that are less polar do not configure themselves in this way because there is less of a reduction in energy if the molecule is not as polar.) This orientation leaves space in the middle of the frozen water molecules. That is why water expands when it freezes.

The fact that ice is less dense than water is related to the fact that?

Water forms hydrogen bonds, which lock the water molecules into crystals that have less density than the distances between water molecules in a liquid state. Without these hydrogen bonds, such a difference in density would not be present.

Why water expands on freezing?

Water has very high dipole moment at 1.85 debye, due to electronegativity difference between H and O atoms. Thus conferring electrostatic attractions that cause a strong tendency for the molecule to form hydrogen bonds at all times, where each hydrogen atom is in line between two 2 oxygen atoms. Electrostatic attractions between the strong dipole moment of water tend to orient them. In ice, they form tetrahedral arrangements. This bonding tends to get stronger as the temperature decreases. When the ice structure is completely bonded the crystalline structure becomes 'open' therefore causing water to expand upon freezing. This hydrogen bonding tendency gets stronger as the temperature gets lower (because there is less thermal energy to shake the hydrogen bonds out of position) and in liquid form, hydrogen bonding still exist until water turns into gaseous state.

Where on earth does water not expand when it freezes?

I think nowhere. The fact that water expands when it freezes is the same for any location. Ordinary Ice (Ice I) is only one of seven different types. Under extremes of pressure and temperature ice has different crystal lattices some of which are heavier than water. On earth (as the question specifies) there is only one place where Ice IV is known to occur -- at the bottom of a thick glacier.

Why do ice floats in water in fact ice is made up of water and the fact that they have the same density?

You are correct, Ice and water have the same composition but the do not have the same DENSITY.When water freezes to form ice, the spacing of the water molecules held rigidly in the ice crystal is actually further apart than the molecules are when they in the liquid state. Water therefore EXPANDS on freezing (which is why frozen pipes burst) and the ice crystals are therefore less dense than the liquid water.

Does freezing streile water?

Why do rocks crack when water has frozen on the surface of a rock?

When water freezes it increases it's volume. So, if it freezes in a crack in the rock, it will exert pressure in the rock. This pressure may be enough to widen the crack. or known as hydro wedging
