What it the stoichiometry of the reaction between NBS and ascorbic acid?
NBS, or N-bromosuccinimide has two components when reacting with
ascorbic acid, an oxidation and a reduction component. Oxidation of
ascorbic acid is C6H8O6 - -> C6H6O6 + (2H+) + 2e and the
reduction of NBS is C4H4BrNO2 + (2H+) + 2e --> C4H5NO2 + HBr.
Combining them, the full stoichiometric equation is C6H8O6 +
C4H4BrNO2 --> C6H6O6 + C4H5NO2 + HBr. In this instance, all
coefficients are 1.
