The octet rule states that:

  • Each atom in a chemical compound gains, looses, or shares electrons to form octet (8) electrons in their highest occupied energy level.
  • They completely fill up the s and p orbitals.
  • Also in a covalent bond, it achieves a more stable noble gas configuration.

The octet rules states that every atom in a molecule try to get eight electrons in their valence shell. If they don't have eight electrons then they try to attend that valency by either sharing or transferring of electrons.

Which of the atoms don't always obey the octet rule H O Br?

Chlorine Cl : it can have a higher valence (ClO2, HClO3) than predicted by the octet rule. Hydrogen H and oxygen O cannot escape the octet rule.

Does PCl2F3 follow the octet rule?

yes PCl3 obey octet rule there are 5 electrons in the valence shell of phosphorous it need 3 electron to complete its octet so it form bond with 3 chlorine after bond formation there are 8 electron in its octet it obey octet rule
