The primary pigment colors are cyan, magenta, and yellow. Mixing equal parts yellow and magenta should give you red. Depending on the pigments you are using, however, there are many combinations that will yield different shades of red. A good strategy is to begin with the color you see as the closest to the one you need and decide whether it needs to be lighter, darker, warmer or cooler and add a color that has the qualities your chosen color lacks. Add a small amount at a time until you are more confident. Red pigments are very common, though and only need to be mixed if resources are limited or a limited palette is used.
