Best Answer

acids are substances that release hydrogen ions into solutions (has a pH number of 1-6)

bases are substances that accept hydrogen ions (has a pH number of 8-13)

-Nothing can be an acid and a base. Although there is a pH number in the middle, which is number 7 A.K.A. neutral.

Almost all liquids will have either acidic or basic traits although some substances are neutral. An acid, when placed in water will ionize into positive hydrogen ions (H+). This H+ ion is a proton. A base, when placed in water will ionize into negative hydroxide ions (OH-). A strong acid/base is one that ionizes 100% when placed in water. Weak acids/bases only ionize partially when placed in water.

Water must normally be present for a substance to be an acid or a base.

A base has an excess of H+ ions while an acid has an excess of OH- ions. If the substance has an equal amount of positive and negative ions, the substance is neutral. Distilled water is an example of this.

An acid is a proton donor.

A base is a proton acceptor.

So, when a substance dissolves in water it produces a substance which is either acidic if it has and excess of positive hydrogen ions (H+), basic if it has an excess of negative hydroxide ions (OH-) or neutral if the amount of H+ and OH- ions are equal.

H+ + OH- --> Water (water is neutral if it's distilled)

Most acids and bases dissolve in water and they are also corrosive. The bases that do dissolve in water are called alkalis.

An acid is a substance with a pH of 0-6.9. A base is a substance with a pH of 7.1-14. A neutral substance has a pH of 7.

pH is the measure of hydrogen ions inside of a substance.
