A 'Ternary Compound' is a compound which consist of three different elements. An example is Sodium Chlorate (NaClO3), which consists of:

-Sodium (Na) -Chlorine (Cl) -Oxygen (O)
Ternary form can be described simply as ABA form, i.e. one part is played, then another diffferent part is played and then it finishes on the same part it started on. It can also be thought of like a sandwich, e.g. bread, then jam, then bread on top to finish.

A binary compound is a compound that contains two different element (for example; NaCl, Fe2S3, Co3O4).

A tertiary compound is a compound that contains three different elements (for example; CuInS2).

Similarly, a quaternary compound contains four elements (for example; YBaCuO7)

All of these terms are normally only used to describe inorganic compounds.
