The properties of an ionic compound are simple. My science teacher put it in a way that was easy to understand. An ionic bond is when an element gives up one or more electrons to another atom so that they will both have a maximum of 8 valence electrons. A covalent bond is when the two atoms share electron clouds and share 8 valence electrons. Co- sharing Valent- valence.

An ionic compound is formed between a metal and a nonmetal atoms. Ionic compounds dissociate when dissolved in an aqueous solution. Ionic substances in solution conduct electricity because the ions are free to move and carry the electrical charge from the anode to the cathode.
Ionic compounds have the following properties:1- They are hard.

2- They are rigid.

3-They have high melting points.

  • Are solid at room temperature
  • Do not conduct electricity heat unless dissolved or molten
  • Have high melting and boiling points
  • Are poor thermal conductors
  • Are quite soluble in water

ionic compunds have a very tight bond and will form a soild crystilized shape. when you break it- it will break perfectly and won't break to their smaller form but you will get a powder shape, that still holds the ionic bond in place. Also, it usually a white crystal.
