Benzene today is mainly used as an intermediate to make other chemicals such as styrene, which is used to make polymers and plastics. Benzene is also used to make phenol for resins and adhesives (phenol-formaldehyde resins). Smaller amounts of benzene are used to make some types of rubbers, lubricants, dyes, detergents, drugs, explosives, napalm and pesticides. Benzene is also used in the production of cyclohexane by catalytic hydrogenation.

Benzene has reduced uses compared to the past due to its carcinogenic properties.
