Acid turns the universal indicator from a bright red down to a yellowy colour, depending on the strength of the acid. The pH of acids are from 1-6. 1-3 being strong acids and 4-6 being weak acids.
In a basic solution the universal indicator will show the colour green, blue, violet or somewhere in between.

Phenolphtalein indicator is colorless in dilute acid solution and basic solutions will turn its color (puplish) red.
Red color in acidic solutions and blue color in basic solutions.

pH of ammonia is around 11-12. Hence when you put it in a universal indicator, you get purple color.
When universal indicator is put in water soluion of alkalis (base) it indicates significant blue colour.
Phenolphthalein (3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one) is a pH indicator or an indicator in volumetry; the color is pink in basic solutions and is colorless in acidic solutions.
Phenolphtalein indicator is colorless in dilute acid solution and basic solutions will turn its color (puplish) red.
Phenolphthalein change the color from pink in basic solutions to colorless in acidic solutions.
since water is pretty neutral, the water does not change color but the universal indicator does. The universal indicator changes color as per the quantity of deionized water... But it changes to straw color or pale yellow in 50mL of deionized water.
An indicator has a different color in acidic or basic solutions; the nature of complexes formed is different.
Red color in acidic solutions and blue color in basic solutions.
A universal indicator changes color in response to the pH of a liquid. Do determine the pH of the liquid, you need to refer to a color chart that tells you which color indicates which pH.

Blue Litmus Paper turns red when it is placed in an acid
pH of ammonia is around 11-12. Hence when you put it in a universal indicator, you get purple color.
