Joseph Priestly discovered "oxygen" in 1744. He called it "dephlogisticated air."
Joseph Tournefort discovered ammonium chloride in 1702 while traveling in Greece. He found white solid deposits near the volcano Mount Vesuvius, which turned out to be ammonium chloride after he conducted experiments on the substance.
Joseph Black first identified carbon dioxide in the 1750s by observing that heating calcium carbonate (chalk) produced a gas that extinguished flames and was heavier than air. This led to the discovery and understanding of carbon dioxide as a distinct gas.
