The spaces that occur on either side of a line in a phase diagram represent the different phases of the compound in question under a given set of conditions (the values on the diagram's x and y axis). The line itself represents equilibrium between the two phases, so the line represents the conditions for which you could have both phases present. To put another way, the line represents the area on the phase diagram where there is a transition from one phase to another.
