Paraffins are a group of hydrocarbons which are "saturated" with carbon to hydrogen bonds, making them relatively inert. They range from methane CH4, to octane C8H18. Paraffins that are liquid at room temperature are in the middle of the range, eg. C4H10

Carbon and Hydrogen; anything else is an impurity. "a paraffin" is one of a homologous series of hydrocarbons, whose formula is Cn H2n+2. Paraffin, on the other hand, is the British name for kerosene. It is a mixture of different paraffins with n in double figures. cf petrol (aka gasoline) where n is around eight to ten. The paraffin where n=8 is named octane; sound familiar ?

"Paraffin oil" does not have an exact chemical composition: It is a mixture of alkanes with the general formula CxH(2x + 2), with the value of "x" generally from about 10 to about 18.
