If the solid is less dense than the liquid, it floats on top. If it is of relatively equal density as the liquid it forms a colloid in which the solid and the liquid solvent are still distinct and separate, but fairly equally distributed . If it is more dense than the liquid, it precipitates out, to the bottom of the liquid.
