A potentially dangerous evolution of chlorine gas.

The mechanism is complex. Bleaching powder is a hypochlorite salt containing OCl- ion.

In acid solution the weak acid HOCl hypochlorous acid is formed.

The following reaction is slow but effective:-

2HOCl -> H+(aq) + Cl- + HClO2 (formation of chlorous acid)

HOCl + ClO2- -> ClO3- +H+ + Cl-

This creation of Cl- is key

There is an equilibrium HOCl + OH3+ + Cl- <-> Cl2 + 2H2O (this occurs when Cl2 dissolves in water) Adding acid to hypochlorite sets this up as shown above.

Excess acid (low pH) drives this equilibrium to the right (Le Chateliers principle) and chlorine gas is evolved first traces are dissolved in water but rapidly it comes out of solution further displacing the equilibrium.

What will happen if bleaching powder reacts with dil sulfuric acid?

When Bleaching Powder is treated with excess Dil. H2SO4, Cl2 is produced. CaOCl2 + H2SO4 ----> CaSO4 + H2O + Cl2 CaOCl2 + 2HCl --------> CaCl2 + H2O + Cl2 Chlorine gas produced in this way is known as available chlorine.

Is bleaching powder acid or base?

Bleaching powder, also known as calcium hypochlorite, is a basic compound. It is an inorganic salt that releases hypochlorite ions in water, which can act as a strong oxidizing agent and is commonly used as a bleaching agent.

What gas released when bleaching powder is added with water?

When bleaching powder (calcium hypochlorite) is added to water, it releases chlorine gas. This occurs as the compound reacts with water, producing hypochlorous acid and releasing chlorine. The reaction can be represented as follows: Ca(OCl)₂ + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + 2HOCl, where the hypochlorous acid can then decompose to release chlorine gas.

What compound should be added to bleaching powder to obtain chlorine?

An acid compound. Be very carefull: Chlorine is very VERY toxic gas.

What is the Action of bleaching powder on hydrochloric acid?

When bleaching powder (calcium hypochlorite) is added to hydrochloric acid, it reacts to produce chlorine gas, calcium chloride, and water. This reaction is exothermic and should be carried out in a well-ventilated area due to the toxic nature of chlorine gas.
