Unequal sharing results when there is significant difference in electronegativities. The more electronegative atom(s) draws bond electrons closer, leaving the less electronegative atom(s) slighty positive. The result of unequal sharing of electrons is the formation of polar bonds.

The electrons will spend most of their time around the more electronegative atom, putting a slightly negative charge on it. The other atom will exhibit a slightly positive charge (the strength of which depending on the electronegativity o the other atom). If a molecule has this unequal sharing, it is said to be 'polar'.

What happens when 1 pair of electrons are shared?

When one pair of electrons is shared, a single covalent bond exists. This bond can be either polar or nonpolar. If the electrons are equally shared, the bond is nonpolar. If the electrons are unequally shared, the bond is polar.
