What happens is that the forces holding the atoms together to form a solid weaken and the atoms are free to move around and become a liquid. Keep heating and the bond holdings holding the atoms break and the compound becomes a gas.

What happens when the temperature stays the same in a melting curve?

During melting the temperature remain constant if it was achieved the melting point.

If a substance is not at its melting or boiling point as the heat content of a sample of matter increases what happens?

As the heat content increases, the temperature of the substance will rise. However, if the substance is not at its melting or boiling point, it will not undergo a phase change. Instead, its temperature will continue to increase until it reaches its melting or boiling point, at which point a phase change will occur.

Why doesnt sucrose have a boiling listed?

Sucrose will decompose (detoriate) when heated up at a temperature before it reaches melting point temperature.

Sand can get as hot as 3110 degrees Fahrenheit. When sand reaches that temperature, it is officially at its melting point.

What Physical Property of water changes when it reaches its melting point?

Its physical state. When it reaches its melting point, it will change from a solid to a liquid.

Why does the temperature become constant at the point of melting till the whole substance of a solid melted?

That happens because any heat that is added to that melting material will be used to cause further melting, until there is nothing left to melt, at which point the added heat can raise the temperature. A solid melts at its melting point; it does not get hotter than the melting point without melting, that's why it is the melting point.
