When atoms combine, they form chemical bonds. (Nuclear reactions are covered elsewhere.) The atoms will form either an ionic or covalent bonds to create molecules of a chemical compound. A compound formed by ionic bonds is one wherein one atom "borrows" electrons from another atom, which "loans" those electrons out. A compound formed by covalent bonds is one wherein the atoms involved will share electrons between them.

We know that table salt is sodium chloride (NaCl), and it is composed of a sodium and a chlorine atom connected by an ionic bond. In that bond, the sodium atom loans an electron to the chlorine atom, which takes that electron. If we consider table sugar, which is sucrose (C12H22O11), the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms share electrons between them in covalent bonds.
