Carbon monoxide is a powerful ligand.

As a ligand it will displace the porphyrin ring from Iron (III) in the blood stream.

Since it displaces the porphyrin ring, the phorphyrin ring cannot accept/discharge oxygen and carbon DIOXDE, because the electron movement through the ring has been disturbed. Thereby the body is starved of oxygen and carbon dioxide is not removed.

The signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache, drowsiness, sleep and death.
