If you are talking about mining or other types of industrial processes it is basically a series of tanks in which (in my personal experience) minerals are first ground very fine, mixed with water, then chemical agents which bind to the desired minerals are then added. these chemicals make the particles you desire to collect hydrophobic (they repel water, or float). this mixture is then agitated and a frothing agent is introduced creating bubbles in the solution. these bubbles carry the desired particles on the surface and are collected as the runoff from the cells.

What is froth flotation?

Froth flotation is a process for selectively separating hydrophobic materials from hydrophobic. This is used in several processing industries. Historically this was first used in the mining industry.

Which ores are concentrated by froth flotation process?

Sulfide ores such as copper, lead, zinc, and nickel are commonly concentrated by froth flotation process. The process involves selectively separating hydrophobic materials from hydrophilic materials by creating a froth layer on the surface of the slurry.

What is the different between sedimentation and flotation?

Sedimentation is the measure of the (simple)movement of solids ,or the time (rate) of movement of undisolved material (solids) , in a column of water or other fluid ( as in sedimentation rate). Flotation is a quality of matter that is less dense than the fluid on which it is suspended . Both solids and liquids float, with liquids forming patches or layers atop the more dense sustrate.

Why is froth flotation a gravity concentration method?

Froth flotation is not a gravity concentration method; it is actually a physicochemical separation process based on the differences in surface properties of particles. In froth flotation, particles are suspended in water and air bubbles are introduced. The particles with hydrophobic surfaces attach to the bubbles and are carried to the surface, forming a froth that is then skimmed off.

What sort of materials are carried through floatation?

Materials that can be carried effectively through flotation include minerals, metals, and other hydrophobic substances that can attach to air bubbles and rise to the surface. These materials are separated from hydrophilic particles during the flotation process, which is commonly used in mineral processing to concentrate desired minerals from ores.

How are buoyancy and flotation linked?

Buoyancy is the force that allows an object to float or be supported when submerged in a fluid. Flotation is the process by which an object rises to the surface of a fluid due to the buoyant force acting upon it. In simplest terms, buoyancy causes flotation.

How is phosphorus obtained?

Phosphorus is mainly obtained from phosphate rock, which is mined and then processed using chemical methods to produce phosphorus compounds. These compounds can be further processed to produce elemental phosphorus. Industrial methods such as the thermal process and the electrothermal process are commonly used to extract phosphorus from phosphate rock.

What physical property does flotation rely on on an ore?

Flotation relies on the physical property of hydrophobicity, which refers to the tendency of certain minerals to repel water and cling to air bubbles. In an ore flotation process, the hydrophobic minerals attach to air bubbles and float to the surface, separating them from hydrophilic minerals that remain in the water.

What is flotation in separating mixture?

In chemistry, the flotation method is used to separate substances that repel water and substances that is attracted to water. It has a variety of applications and is often used to extract mineral ores from its surroundings.
