Nichrome is a metal alloy containing nickel and chromium, hence the name, usually 80 percent nickel, 20 percent chromium. A nichrome wire loop is a length of wire from this metal with a little loop twisted into one end and a handle attached to the other. You can stick the loop in a flame and not hurt it.

These are used in Biology to transfer microorganisms to culture media, and in chemistry to do flame tests.

Electricity Conducting Lab Experiment

What is the affect of different wires connected to a 6-volt battery?

Hypotheses: Copper: It might not be visible but it will release the flow of all electrons and it will drain the battery because of that it will drain it very fast.

Nichrome: I'm assuming it will allow the flow of electrons but because it's so skinny it will slow down the flow by a little bit.

Steel Wool: It may cause sparks, heat, and it might glow.

Controls: Battery, wires, tissue, slate table, and plastic lid as insulator.

Variables: Copper, Nichrome, Steel wool

  • When the electrons bump into and collide with metal atoms such as the metal filament in a light bulb due to the collision the metal heats up and starts to glow.
  • This experiment is too see what type of material is the best conductor to light a light bulb.
  • The size of the wire in any case matters, because the longer the wire the more resistance.
  • It matters if the clamps are a certain distance apart when they touch the test wires because the shorter the distance the faster the flow of electrons.

Lowest resistance goes to…………. Copper!!!

Medium resistance goes to…...........Nichrome!!

Highest resistance goes to…………Steel Wool!

  • With Copper you can use to light flashlights and light bulbs for a bright shine. With Nichrome you can use it to make an electrical heater for the heat it gives off. With Steel Wool you can use it to light a fire with a battery in case of emergency.
