Oxidation is a process in which something (an atom or molecule or substance) loses an electron to something else. Photo-oxidation is therefore the process of oxidation which is caused by shining light on it. Often, light can be used to cause reactions to happen, such as oxidation. The term "photo" comes from "photon" which is light.

∙ 10y agoPhoto Oxidation means knock out of electrons from a chemical compound in the presence of light by the high energy photons striking the compound and transferring their energy to the compound and thus knocking them out.
In case of plants photo oxidation is the same phenomenon(described above), which leads to destruction of light capturing machinery chlorophyll. Accessory pigments like carotenoids play role in saving the plant from photo oxidation by absorbing the high intensity light.
