The most common category of compounds present in an eraser is rubber. Most rubbers contain carbon, hydrogen and some amount of sulfur. And further, to give a color, pigments may be used and they too add different elements. An eraser without any pigments should have a brownish white color.

An eraser is rubber which is made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and zinc oxide. Natural rubber is made from plant latex, which is a long polymer called cis-1,4-polyisoprene, with a molecular weight of over 100,000 daltons (compared to water's 18 daltons).

There is no definite formula because the ingredients and materials used in erasers vary.

Cheaper erasers are made from cheap synthetic rubber which is left over from other industrial uses.

While more expensive or specialist erasers contain a variation of vinyl, plastic and gum-like material such as soy-gum.
