Best Answer

Energy must be provided to make water decompose. This can be done using electricity, among other means. The result is release of hydrogen gas and oxygen gass. This is the chemical formula for the process. 2 H2O -----> 2H2 +O2

You get bubbles of hydrogen collecting around one electrode, and bubbles of

oxygen collecting around the other one. The bubbles eventually grow, separate

from the electrodes, and float to the surface, where the gases can be collected.

What is the temperature of water decomposition?

Purely thermal decomposition of water begins around 1800 degrees Kelvin at 1 ATM. By about 2500 degrees Kelvin, approximately 50% of the water is in a molecular configuration other than H2O. By approximately 3500 Kelvin, nearly 100% of the water has decomposed into atomic H and O.
