I assume you know coal is a solid and petroleum is a liquid.

They were created in different ways. Coal was made from land based plant life, mainly ferns, that became submerged, such as being in flooded forests or swamps. Since they were under water these dead plants did not decay completely. Over time they were were covered by sediment. As they were buried deeper and deeper the temperature and the pressure of the sediment compressed it and turned it into coal.

Oil was created by a similar process but it was made from sea life (plankton) that died and drifted to the bottom of a lake or sea.

How do you tell the difference between black jet and coal?

Jet is a type of lignite coal that is very hard and deep black in color, often used for making jewelry. Coal, on the other hand, is a sedimentary rock that is combustible and commonly used as a fuel source. The main difference between the two is their composition and uses.

What is the difference between brown and black coal besides their colour?

One main difference between brown coal (lignite) and black coal (anthracite) is their carbon content. Black coal has a higher carbon content and lower moisture content, making it a more efficient fuel source. Brown coal has a lower carbon content and higher moisture content, making it less energy-dense and less efficient.

What are two differences between peat lignite bituminous coal and anthracite coal?

One difference is their carbon content: peat and lignite have lower carbon content compared to bituminous and anthracite coal. Another difference is their formation process: peat is not fully coal yet, as it is the earliest stage of coal formation, while anthracite coal is the highest grade and the result of further coalification processes.

What is the difference between thermal coal and steam coal?

Thermal coal is a broad classification that includes various types of coal used for generating electricity or heat. Steam coal, on the other hand, is a specific type of thermal coal with high heat-producing properties, making it suitable for powering steam turbines in electricity generation. In essence, steam coal is a subtype of thermal coal used specifically for generating steam to produce electricity.

What is the difference between peat and brown coal and black coal?

Peat is an early stage of coal formation with low carbon content and high moisture content. Brown coal, also known as lignite, has a higher carbon content and lower moisture content compared to peat. Black coal, including bituminous and anthracite coal, has the highest carbon content and is the most mature form of coal.
