An example of nonvolatile memory is the hard-drive. Though slower than RAM, data saved to the hard-drive remains when the computer is shut down.

Volatiles are typically under the control of external processes and cannot be cached. A non-volatile is a variable that has a predictable pattern of behaviour within a process and can therefore be cached for faster access.

Volatile substances have a lower b.p. than non volatile substances because they have fewer and/or smaller intermolecular forces of attraction holding the molecules together. So, the difference between the boiling point of volatile and non volatile material is the degree of intermolecular forces.
