But the oxygen also combines with the hot nitrogen in the exhaust stream to create the nitrogen dioxide.

It turns out that NO2 has a reddish brown color to it, and if you look at an urban sky where stagnant air results from impaired atmospheric circulation, the sky takes on a reddish brown (a "dirty brown") look because of the nitrogen dioxide concentrating in that air. Though nitrogen dioxide is a common industrial chemical produced as an intermediary in a number of reactions, it is in the form of air pollution that we most frequently encounter it.
