Proton is one of the constituents of the nucleus. It has positive charge. Its mass is almost nearly equal to that of neutron but slightly less. These protons and neutrons are held so tight in the nucleus by the nuclear force which is the largest force observed so far. Protons with its positive charge keeps electrons go around the nucleus. As electrons are kept under control, when external energy is absorbed by the atom the electron goes to the excited state. When it comes back to the down position that absorbed energy is given out in the form of radiation. Thus protons play an important role to change the energy from one form to another form.

Protons, being positively charged particle, can be accelerated by some accelerators and with the gained kinetic energy it can bombard on some nuclei and nuclear transmutation can be done.

Proton actually is a code for identifying the element. The number of protons decides or assigns the name of the element. If one proton is inside the nucleus then it is hydrogen. Two means it is Helium. Three for lithium, four beryllium and so on. Uranium has 92 protons. Gold 79 protons and Mercury 80.

The number of Protons in an atom discerns what element the atom is, i.e. an atom of Lithium has 3 protons; if one proton were to be taken away, it would become a negatively charged Helium atom.
