if you were to count the individual weight of all the protons neutrons and electrons you will get 40. however this is not the case when they are joined together due to something call the strong neuclear force which causes the atom to weigh 39.9

Oxygen is number 8 on the PToE. This means it has 8 protons. We know that the total mass of an atom is the sum of protons and neutrons (electrons are insignificant). Therefore: Protons + Neutrons = Mass If we use algebra and subtract protons to solve for neutrons, the new equation becomes: Neutrons = Mass - Protons Now let's plug in the numbers. Neutrons = 18 - 8 Therefore, an oxygen atom with a mass of 18 contains 10 neutrons.

How do you find the number of electrons in an atom if you know the number of protons and neutrons?

In a neutral atom, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons of the nucleus.

Is the number of electrons equal the number of neutrons in an atom?

not usually, a standard atom will contain the same amount of electrons and PROTONS, not neutrons

The mass number of this atom is 23, the sum of the number of protons and neutrons.

Will an atom with 27 protons 32 neutrons and 27 electrons be electrically neutral?

Neutrons have no charge. When the number of protons of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in it, the atom is neutral, in other words, it has no charge.

What are the relationship between protons and neutrons in a atom?

The atomic number corresponds to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. It also corresponds to the number of electrons in a neutral atom. A neutral atom, you'll recall, is one where the number of electrons equals the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. We remember that atoms often "loan out" or "borrow" electrons, so the electron count will not always equal the proton count.

Is an atom that has the same number of protons as neutrons a neutral atom?

False. The atom that has the same number of protons as it has electrons is a neutral atom.
