The process that allows oxygen and carbon dioxide to transfer is called respiration. In the lungs, oxygen is taken in from the air we breathe and is exchanged for carbon dioxide that is then exhaled. Oxygen enters the blood through the alveoli in the lungs during inhalation, where it diffuses into the bloodstream. Carbon dioxide leaves the blood in the same location, diffusing from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled during exhalation.
Oxygen leaves the plant through small pores on the leaves called stomata during the process of transpiration. Carbon dioxide enters the plant through the same stomata during photosynthesis, where it is converted into glucose for energy.

The air that enters the lungs is richer in oxygen when it enters the lungs. when it leaves it has more carbon dioxide and less oxygen as the lungs expel carbon dioxde and some unused oxygen.
