Molecules like aliphatic carbon chains and minerals are found on meteorites but these are not unexpected. The truly interesting molecules that are found on meteorites include amino acids and nucleotide analogs, which are organic molecules that are essential to life as we know it.

Carbon-based molecules associated with Earth life have been found in interstellar and circumstellar matter. The most complex so far include hydrogen cyanide, methyl cyanide and isopropyl cyanide (has a branched carbon backbone).

Benzene, a ring-shaped hydrocarbon molecule, has been detected around some distant stars.

Another molecule, which is linked to amino acid formation, is acetamide (ethanamide).

What kinds of extraterrestrial meteors?

All meteors are extraterrestrial. As to composition, there are three general types: irons, stony-irons and stonies, the names indicating the relative proportions of metal and mineral. Stony meteorites are the most common, but iron meteorites are the most commonly collected, because they appear distinctive against the usual backgrounds. Stonies tend to be overlooked as just, well, stones. Although we're really talking about the same things - chucks of material from outer space - separate observations have led to three terms for these objects. A "meteor" is the flash of light in the sky caused by the object burning in the friction of the atmosphere. The chunk of material we find on the ground (and display in museums) is a "meteorite"; ("-ite" is the suffix for "rock") and the things that are still in space are "meteoroids."
