Strong acids readily release H+ ions in solution. H+ tends to like to attack fats, lipids, and proteins that makes up your skin and tissue. Acids also can break down inorganic matter like rocks and concrete, by the same concept.

Bases are just about the same thing. In solution they readily release OH- ions, and they have a tendency of dissolving organic matter and the proteins they are made of. Most strong bases aren't very effective at inorganic matter like acid, but they are still effective at organic matter.
