Ionic bonds involve electrostatic attraction between two ions, or electrically charged atoms. This occurs because one element transfers an electron to another element, which then changes the electric charge of both and bonds them together through that charge.

Ionic Bonds can be formed by all metals, in the Periodic Table. However when ever you get more in depth into Chemistry you will learn that non metals such as noble gasses can be comounded as well. if yo uneed any more help contact me via email... strickland@oppshell.com

Ionic bonds are made between two atoms that have exchanged one or more electrons. One of the atoms will be positively charged and one atom will be negatively charged; the bond is actually the attraction between the positively charged atom and the negatively charged atom.

An ionic bond is formed when a metal reacts with a non-metal to produce a compound in which electrons are "lost" by the metal and "gained" by the other component.

The most basic example would be when sodium (Na ^+1) reacts with chlorine (Cl ^-1) to make sodium chloride (NaCl ^0) By gaining an electron, chlorine now has 8 valence electrons.

Usually an ionic compound consists of a metal bonding with a nonmetal; like NaCl. In order for two elements to be ionic, the differences in there electronegativity must be significant. Two elements have a greater difference in electronegativity are more likely to form an ionic bond.
