If you consider the concept of life as human beings understand it, water is absolutely necessary for life forms to exist. Life forms on our planet consist primarily of H20. Therefore, scientists will look for places that have abundant water as possible places for life to exist elsewhere. However, there are creatures that live at the bottoms of the oceans that require some type of sulfur in their environment. I'm not sure which type they need. As I recall, the sulfur is used in their 'bodies' the same way most life forms use oxygen to live. Something to do with respiration. I think this was a relatively recent discovery. Before that, scientists assumed that every life form required oxygen to exist. I believe that we limit ourselves in defining the existence of others according to what we ourselves have experienced. This is 'thinking inside the box'. No one seems to consider that life may exist in ways other than what we understand. Other life forms could possibly not be limited by the same factors as the life forms on Earth. Perhaps OTHER conditions are necessary to create different forms of life????
