Iron occurs in nature with some impurities like carbon, Sulpher, phosphorous, manganese etc. Each of these has its special effect on the final properties of the iron alloy. Therefore we actually make iron carbon alloy with controlled ratios of carbon. Carbon gives the iron some softness and elasticity and reduces its hardness. Some additives are intentionally added to the alloy to gain some needed properties. Various elements such as manganese, chromium, vanadium and tungsten are added, that affect qualities such as hardness, malleability and strength. The main component is Carbon, with content from 0.2 - 2.5% in most cases, depending on the grade.

The processing removes the impurities then adds the carbon and any alloying metals in very carefully-controlled conditions. Carbon does not soften the iron, but at slightly higher proportions, it allows the steel to be hardened and tempered. Add too much carbon to iron though, and it does not give steel, but crystallises as graphite between the iron crystals to give the material called Cast Iron, with very different properties, including much lower melting-point and melt viscosity, to steel.

What mineral is needed to make haemoglobin?

Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Without enough iron, the body cannot produce adequate haemoglobin, leading to a condition called iron-deficiency anemia.

What substances in damp air that are needed for the iron to react?

In damp air, the primary substances needed for iron to react are moisture (water vapor) and oxygen. The presence of water facilitates the formation of electrolytic solutions, which can accelerate the oxidation process of iron. This leads to corrosion, commonly seen as rust (iron oxide), when iron reacts with both oxygen and water. Additionally, impurities in the air, such as salt or pollutants, can further enhance this reaction.

What is the compound needed to make iron rust?

Iron rusts when it reacts with oxygen in the presence of water to form iron oxide. The compound needed for iron to rust is iron oxide, which is commonly known as rust.

Why did people use iron weapons?

well people used iron to make weapons cause of they needed something to make weapons out of the suddenly a group of people found iron and a use of it. so they needed to be protect so they carved iron and make it there very own weapon. I KNOW THAT I WOULD ;D

What substances are needed to make metal rust?

Metal rusts when it is exposed to oxygen and water. The presence of oxygen in the air causes a chemical reaction with iron in the metal to form iron oxide, which is the reddish-brown substance known as rust. Other substances like salt can speed up the rusting process by providing more ions to react with the metal surface.

Does iron react to other substances?

Yes because it reacts with Sulphur(S) to make Iron Sulphide a totally new substance.
